Suchitoto_2.jpgIt’s been called one of the best boutique hotels in El Salvador and from the beginning Los Almendros de San Lorenzo was unexpected.

Opened in 2005, after a 17 month renovation of a 200-year-old house, the hotel is the creation of a French fashion executive (Pascal Libaily) and a former El Salvadorian ambassador (Joaquín Rodezno).

The hotel melds traditional Central American design and décor with French antiques and modern art collected and displayed with the couple’s elegant, easy style.

Even the location—in Suchitoto, a breathtakingly beautiful colonial town 25 miles outside the capital of San Salvador—is unexpected.

parkhyattabu.bmpIf you haven't heard of Saadiyat Island, listen up because it is poised to become one of the hottest destinations in the Middle East.

This tropical island off the coast of Abu Dhabi will eventually be home to the largest Guggenheim Museum in the world (designed by Frank Gehry), as well as an out post of the Louvre. In addition to miles of beach, the island also has a Gary Player-designed golf course and academy. Luxury hotels are beginning to pop up there, including the just-opened Park Hyatt Abu Dhabi Hotel and Villas.

The overall look is modern meets Arabic decor. Each of the 306 rooms, suites, and villas has a separate balcony or terrace. Some rooms have private terraces with plunge pools, outdoor rain showers, and sun beds. In addition to the...

cochonopener.jpgJames Beard award winning chef Donald Link has done it again. Not content with three mainstay restaurants in New Orleans— Herbsaint, Cochon and Cochon Butcher or with his rock-solid reputation as a city supporter who puts his money where his mouth is (he opened his second restaurant, Cochon, six months after Katrina hit at a time when other local chefs were closing doors and firing staff), the chef has just added another delicious link in his pork-centric empire.

On September 15 Cochon Lafayette opened its doors in Lafayette, Louisiana about two hours from New Orleans. Two weeks later I had lunch there...

llbeansnow.bmpThe temperature is starting to drop, so true to my New England roots, I put in my annual cold weather gear order at LL Bean (new boots, hats and gloves, and shearling slippers...  but LL Bean, please bring back the Wicked Good Slippers). There were also plenty of snow toys which caught my eye. For a mere $14.95, this snowball and snowblock kit will ensure hours of good, old fashioned fun. I also loved the look of the Wooden Rambler  Wagon set, which includes a sturdy wooden wagon on removable skis. Simple and brilliant, for $249.

goldenoakkitchen.jpgIf you love traveling to Walt Disney World but want to keep the magic going for a little longer, here’s your chance to own a slice of it.  For the first time in its history, Disney is selling luxury homes within the resort. Called Golden Oak, this master-planned resort community was developed by Walt Disney Imagineering  (the brains who help design everything from the parks and rides to ABC’s Times Square Studios) and is just three miles from the Magic Kingdom.

Owners can choose to live there full-time or use the homes as a vacation retreat for friends and family, although they cannot rent the properties.

And if you think that these homes are plastered with Mickey and Goofy imagery, think...

pullman_opener.bmpIf you can't bear the thought of battling crowds to get your holiday shopping done, here is an altogether more civilized way to shop. This December, Orient-Express’s British Pullman will debut the inaugural "Shopping on the Rails" trip, where the venerable train will play host to some of the most luxurious retail brands in the world.

Here's how it works. Guests will enjoy a four course lunch while traveling (in style, of course) through the Kent countryside. Afterwards, they will be free to explore the train and shop a wide selection of products from top British brands, including Harrods, Brora, Cath Kidston, perfumier Miller Harris, Liberty, Holland & Holland and jeweler Astley Clarke, among others.

oakcandle.bmpNew York is a smelly place - and the city's various odors were once mapped, ingeniously, by The New York Times (check it out here). Many of those smells are bad (think rotting garbage in August) but there are a few pleasant surprises, like my favorite, the scent of sugared nuts on a chilly day. But for an all together different take on New York's olfactory cornucopia, check out the new Oak Light Candle project.

OAK has teamed up with the fragrance/candle makers at Brooklyn’s Joya Studio along with world-class perfumer Rayda Vegato come up with four scents which capture the scents of New York, by location. There's Christopher + West in 1967, St. Marks + First in 1985, McKibben + Bogart in...

caprihotel.bmpThe calendar may be telling us that summer is over, but the first few weeks in September offer a great opportunity to keep the summer vibe going. In case you never planned your summer getaway, there's still time. Consider the super stylish new Capri Hotel in Southampton, which opened earlier this summer. It was launched by the same team behind the W South Beach and the Surf Lodge in Montauk. This stylish hotel features an outpost of Nobu as well as a boutique by Cynthia Rowley, who also lent a hand designing the hotel rooms. When you're not trying on bikinis or nibbling on miso cod, most guests will be lounging poolside at the Beach Club, pictured. Rates start at $300. Capri Southampton, 281 Country Road 39A, Southampton, NY 11968. Phone: (631) 504-6575.

tilibags.bmpMany of us use the humble Ziploc bag for a million and one reasons that have nothing to do with food. They are handy for packing shampoo bottles, schleping wet bathing suits or storing makeup, not to mention stashing loose change, receipts and vitamins. But instead of using a plain, boring Ziploc bag, try a far more interesting one from Tili. These colorful bags come in gallon and quart sizes, and in punchy colors like orange and lime (pictured), fuschia-green and green-blue. A dozen gallon bags cost $8.49 but trust us, lugging around your junk has never looked so good.
