I wasn't sure what to call
Winvian, the
extravagant experiment in one-of-a-kind cottage accommodation
near Litchfield. Resort? Retreat? God forbid, theme park? As I
checked into the Treehouse, one of 18 creations on the 113 acre
property, I was still struggling with the nomenclature (the
owners have wisely given up and simply call the place
Winvian).
Savvy New Yorkers have long
escaped to Northwestern Connecticut to enjoy the forests,
vineyards and charming villages, all just 90 miles away from
Manhattan (this area, known as the Hamptons of Connecticut, is
also where celebs like Mia Farrow and Kevin Bacon call home). The
newest and glossiest place to stay in this area is Winvian, a 113-acre
private resort in Connecticut's Litchfield Hills. The resort has
just 19 rooms and the owners called in a team of 19 architects to
create a series of whimsical cottages. The Golf Cottage has
green-carpeted floors, which have holes and is uneven (on purpose
of course). The Woodlands cottage comes with a stone waterfall
behind the headboard and two sinks in the bathroom created from
real tree trunks, and the Helicopter Cottage houses a fully
restored 1968 Sikorsky HH37 Sea King Pelican, the Coast Guard
helicopter filmed in the ocean rescue scene in Top Gun.
On site, there's also a 5,000-square-foot spa which uses Eve Lom products
and also available are private hot yoga classes by the fire and
an array of personal training sessions (both indoors and out).
Rates start at $1,450 per night and the entire property can be
rented for $35,000 per night. Winvian, 155 Alain White Road,
