phonebooth.bmpWhen I lived in London, I probably didn't appreciate quirky British design as much as I do now that I can't find it as easily here in the US. Case in point- this cool wallpaper depicting the classic red British phonebox. The price isn't cheap - it retails for £375.00 from Pedlars.co.uk.  And if you are feeling really nostalgic for a slice of Britain, and price is no object, check out their vintage bus signs as well.

campechehammock.jpgStarwood Hotels owns or operates more than 1,000 hotels in more than 100 countries. Fewer than 80 of those are part of the hotel giant’s elite Luxury Collection and only five of those are part of The Haciendas group in southern Mexico. These hotels are housed in what were once the grand homes of the owners of sisal (and sugar and cattle) farms and factories who made fortunes supplying natural plant fibers to the rope and twine making industry in the late 18th and early 19th centuries—not unlike Mexican versions of the southern plantations in the United States.

When sisal was pushed aside in favor of cheaper and stronger synthetic materials most of Mexico’s haciendas were abandoned and fell into ruin and the clutches of...

fullerton.bmpNow that the weather has turned unexpectedly and shockingly cold (ok, I'm a wimp), I'm dreaming about warmer locales - ideally someplace steamy and tropical. I loved the time I spent in Singapore, and the hotel scene there is hotter than ever. One of the newest, shiniest places to stay is the Fullerton Bay Hotel, the sister property to the Fullerton. Located on the Marina Bay and walking distance to everything, the Fullerton Bay has an Art Deco vibe and is the only hotel in Singapore with over-water views. Each one of the 100 guest rooms has a balcony with a water view - but for most guests, the real aquatic highlight will be the rooftop pool. The 25 meter lap pool also has a tapas bar and becomes a trendy lounge area at night.

prometheus.bmpThe other day while shopping in my local Whole Foods, I got suckered into buying a chilled drink near the check out area. I grabbed a bottle that said "lemonade ginger" and didn't think too much about it until I chugged it in the car- and nearly choked. My eyes watered. My nose burned. It felt like I had accidently inhaled a pile of chili powder. It hurt, but oddly enough, I sort of liked the burn.

The unassuming bottle I had picked up was by Prometheus Spring, which sells three types of capsaicin spiced drinks (capsaicin is extracted from chili peppers and is thought to boost endorphins). In addition to the Lemon Ginger which I tried, there is also Lychee Wasabi and Pomegranate Black Pepper. They're great on their own, but I bet they would be even better laced with vodka or gin.

queteroopener.bmpThe excitement has finally settled down following Mexico’s nationwide mega-fiestas marking the country’s 200th anniversary of independence from Spain which culminated on September 16, Mexico’s Independence Day. Now it’s time to start gearing up for the country’s 100th anniversary of the Mexican Revolution being marked on November 20 and the place to be is the cosmopolitan city of Santiago de Querétaro.

This UNESCO World Heritage City is where the Mexican constitution was written and signed following the revolution and you can sleep right next to the Teatro de la Republica where that momentous event took place. Just book a room at aptly-named La Casona de la Republica.

indianwells_opener.bmpI’d just returned from a week in the San Francisco Bay Area, where I’d checked-in and out of three different hotels (well, OK, I did that to myself).  As a non-native, I spent a lot of time getting lost. I was inadequately dressed for the fickle weather. Plus, I felt winded walking up and down San Francisco’s famous hills. The queues at the museums stretched around the block, and waits for a table at popular restaurants were an hour or more. I hit standstill traffic on the way to the Napa, and parking everywhere was a hot mess.

In the end, it was all good.  But after all that running around, I craved one of those vacations where I didn’t have to leave the resort.  As an antidote to my Northern California adventures, I booked two nights at The Renaissance Esmeralda, in...

belize.bmpYou want the beauty and peace of a deserted island but the comfort of good food, good company and good accommodations? Welcome to Turneffe Flats Lodge on Turneffe Atoll off the coast of Belize. Three hundred square mile Turneffe Atoll is the largest of only four coral atolls in the entire Western Hemisphere. The second largest reef in the world passes right by it, often within a stone’s throw of the shoreline.

The isolation, lack of any large scale development and the natural attributes of the atoll make it the most biologically diverse in the Caribbean. Sixty species of birds live or migrate through here. The water teems with dolphins and sharks and crocodiles.

Everything about Turneffe Flats Lodge (affectionately nicknamed T-Flats by the lodge’s many repeat guests) is...

pera_palace.jpgThe latest and greatest place to stay in magical Istanbul is the newly restored Pera Palace, which has just re-opened following a two year, 23 million Euro restoration. The Pera Palace Hotel first opened in 1892 as the first luxury hotel in the Ottoman Empire, providing the last stopover in the East for passengers onboard The Orient Express.

The Palace is rumored to be the inspiration for Agatha Christie's "Murder on the Orient Express" and hosted dozens of famous guests in its heyday. It was also the first building in Istanbul to offer electricity, hot running water and an elevator.

Today the Pera Palace features 115 rooms including 16 suites named after the hotel’s most illustrious guests, including Mustafa Kemal Atatürk; Agatha Christie; the Emperor of Austria-Hungary, Franz...
